Blackjack Glossary

As a new player, you will frequently hear blackjack player and dealer using various terms and slang. When playing the game and it is important that you know what they mean. If you are sitting at the table and confused about what everybody is talking about then you are not able to make money. Spend a little time and learn about the blackjack term.

Action- This is a common gambling term that refers to the total amount wager in a particular period of time like ten bets of $15 each is $150 of action.

Anchorman- The player in the last seat of the table, on the dealer’s distant who is last to act.

Blackjack- A blackjack happens when the two cards you are deal total 21 and an automatic winning hand containing both 10 value card and an Ace.

Bust- A bust happens when you have a hand totaling more than 21 points and an automatic loser.

Black chip- A casino chip worth $100

Cage- Where the casino cashier is placed

Card Counter- An expert player who keeping track of the cards as they are dealt.

Card Counting- The work of keep tracking of the value of the cards dealt at the table.

Camouflage- any strategy meant to cover-up card counting.

Dealer- The casino employee, facing the players, who deals the card at the table

Deck- A standard deck of 52 cards which is used

Discards- The cards which is already been played and thrown away

Early surrender- Player’s choice to surrender half his bet as the dealer checks

Favorable Deck- The cards left in the deck is in the player's favor.

Face cards- The king, queen and the Jack, they are in each worth 10 points.

Flat bet- To bet the same amount every hand, without variation

Griffin Investigations- A private Investigator Corporation that focuses in card counters and casino cheatings

Hard hand- Any hand without an ace and any hand with an ace where the ace should be counted as a 1 to avoid busting.

Hard total- The total of a hard hand

Hand- The original cards dealt to every player

Insurance- Optional bet which can be made when the dealer is showing an ace.

Junket- A casino subsidized travel package for a group of gamblers.

Marker- an IOU, signed by players who have casino credit

Natural- Slang for a blackjack

Paint- Any King, Queen or Jack (all painted pictures)

Pat Hand- An original holding of hard 17 or higher

Quarters- Slang for $25 chips.

Round- Total series of playing in which everybody has acted on their hands

Session- A period of time spent on gambling

Ten-Poor Deck- A deck in which more 10-value cards have been deal

Toke- Any tip to a dealer or other casino employee

Unit- A standard bet size

Upcard- the dealer’s exposed card, seen by every players
